Help Shape the Future of Optical Networking in the 6G Era!

Optical Communications Systems & Networks Laboratory (OCSN)

The University of Patras’ Optical Communications Systems & Networks (OCSN) Lab is leading a groundbreaking initiative to define the roadmap for next-generation optical networking solutions as we move toward the 6G era.

As we look toward the future of connectivity, optical technologies will play a crucial role in supporting the ambitious requirements of 6G networks. These networks will require ultra-high capacity, low-latency, and energy-efficient infrastructure to enable the next wave of digital transformation.

Three Critical Areas of Focus

We’ve developed three targeted questionnaires focusing on key domains that will shape the future of optical networking:

1. Fiber to the X (FTTx) – The global FTTx market is projected to grow from $11.3 billion in 2025 to $18.4 billion by 2035, with a 5% CAGR. This growth is driven by increasing demand for high-speed internet, rising data consumption, and government efforts to improve broadband access. FTTx technologies—including FTTH (Home), FTTB (Building), and FTTC (Curb)—are evolving from simple residential broadband solutions to foundational components of next-generation infrastructure.

2. X-Haul Networks – The X-Haul network architecture, encompassing fronthaul, midhaul, and backhaul, is critical for 6G implementation. These networks must provide resilience, ultra-high capacity, and ultra-low latency to support the varied requirements of emerging 6G services. Projects like PROTEUS-6G are already focusing on advanced packet-optical x-haul networking infrastructure to support future 6G cellular networks.

3. AI Clusters & Data Centers – With AI emerging, data centers can expect significant boosts in bandwidth and data transfer speeds, potentially reaching terabits per second. This increase will allow data centers to handle larger volumes of data more efficiently, supporting data-intensive applications and services.

Why Your Input Matters

As a leading expert in the field, your insights are critical to identifying trends, challenges, and opportunities in these transformative areas. The OCSN Lab at the University of Patras conducts advanced research related to various aspects of modern optical communications systems and networks, from short-reach applications like Fiber to the Home and 5G/6G Fronthaul to backbone ultra-high capacity networks.

Together, we’ll create a comprehensive, annually updated roadmap that will drive innovation and shape the next wave of technological advancements in optical networking.
