Dr. Andreas Gkontzis is a Senior Electrical Engineer whose work bridges big-data analytics and machine-learning methods for adaptive and personalized systems. He studied Electrical Engineering and pursued postgraduate studies at the University of Patras, where he applied IT, big-data processing, and machine learning to model and control the response of shape memory alloys in smart polymer matrix composites. He earned his Ph.D. from the Hellenic Open University, developing AI-driven learning-analytics frameworks to detect trends in large-scale distance-learning data and identify at-risk students early for timely interventions. For more than a decade, he has served at the CCIS—Center for Computing, Information, and Communication Systems (Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of Patras), contributing to central IT infrastructures and big-data frameworks that strengthen computing ecosystems and support innovative teaching practices. He has also worked for the Municipality of Patras as an Electrical Engineer and Crisis Smart City Resilience Officer, focusing on resilience and continuity of critical IT, security, communications, and automated systems, while transforming data from municipal platforms into actionable, citizen-oriented services through an interoperability layer and data pipelines. Over the last four years, he has represented the Municipality of Patras in the Ministry of Interior’s Innovation and Best Practices Network, alongside sustained research and writing activity.
